African Day is an eau de parfum, 50 ml, with about 20% fragrance oil, the same concentration in every fragrance we make. It costs €25, with free shipping on orders from €49 and delivery in 2 to 5 working days.

Byredo sells Bal d'Afrique as an eau de parfum, and African Day matches that strength rather than a lighter eau de toilette, so the notes sit at the same weight. It is not as dense as an extrait de parfum: the aim is longevity rather than sheer projection, so vetiver and musk carry the scent quietly instead of pushing it across a room the way some designer fragrances do. This dupe is built on the same idea, present without taking over.

The oils are French, the filling is done by hand, and nothing is tested on animals. Fifteen days to swap African Day for something else if it does not suit you.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

African Day is our perfume dupe of Byredo Bal d'Afrique, a fragrance built around a mood rather than any single flower or spice. It opens on marigold, bergamot, lemon and neroli, moves into a heart of violet and jasmine, and settles on amber, musk, vetiver and cedar.

The accord reads bright and slightly bitter-green at first, then the heart notes turn soft and powdery through the violet, which is the part most people recognise straight away. Sillage is moderate rather than loud, and it sits close to the skin after the first hour. Longevity runs around six hours, long enough for a full day without reapplying.

Byredo perfume dupes are difficult to get right, and Bal d'Afrique dupes especially, because so much of the original rests on one powdery violet note. This is not a clone: it is our own reading of a fragrance built the same way, and as a fragrance dupe it puts more bergamot up front than most dupes manage, with a musk base that holds a citrus-led opening together longer than you would expect.

EDT, EDP or EXDP - what you are actually buying

The difference between these labels is not quality but how much perfume oil sits in the bottle. That decides how long the scent stays on your skin and how far it travels.

EDT Eau de Toilette 5 to 15% perfume oil

The lightest of the three. It opens fresh and fast, but fades after three to five hours. Pleasant in heat and at the office, as long as you top it up during the day.

Our choiceEDP Eau de Parfum ~20% perfume oil

The middle ground that became the standard. It lasts six to eight hours, one spray in the morning is enough, and the scent stays recognisable into the evening without filling the room.

EXDP Extrait de Parfum 20 to 40% perfume oil

The densest form, worn in drops, and it can last over ten hours. In return it loses that easy opening, and the price per bottle climbs the most.

Why we chose EDP

Every Chez Pierre perfume is made in Eau de Parfum concentration, with 20% perfume oil. That is not by accident.

An eau de toilette would mean carrying the bottle with you and refreshing the scent after lunch. An extrait would push the price up, and only someone counting hours would notice the gain. EDP sits exactly in between: one spray in the morning carries the whole working day, and the scent opens and develops instead of settling on the skin at once.

So we don't make lighter and pricier versions of the same scent. We make one, in the concentration where that scent works best.

Longevity, projection and sillage

Three things describe every perfume, whatever the price or the name on the bottle. Once you separate them, it is easier to say what you actually want from a scent.

Longevity

How many hours the scent stays on skin

Measured from the moment you spray to the moment you can no longer smell it up close. It depends on the concentration, but also on your skin: on dry skin every perfume lasts less, so a dab of unscented cream before spraying helps.

Projection

How far it travels around you

Strongest in the first hour, it tells you how much space the scent takes up. Big projection is great for evenings and colder days, while at the office or in a meeting it usually gets in the way more than it helps.

Sillage

The trail you leave behind

Pronounced „see-yazh“, it means the trail a scent leaves behind you. It is the reason someone turns around as you pass. A perfume can last a long time and still leave a small trail, and the other way round.

Strong is not the same as good. A perfume with huge projection quickly tires both you and the people around you, while one without any trail stays your own private thing.

That is why every one of our perfume descriptions says how it wears, not only how it smells.

African Day

African Day works best through spring and summer, when the citrus and marigold top notes have room to breathe, though the amber, musk and vetiver base keeps it wearable once winter sets in. It suits daytime wear, from the office to a weekend out, more than a heavy evening scent, and it holds up in real summer heat as easily as it does on a cold winter morning, which not every citrus fragrance manages.

Byredo built Bal d'Afrique as unisex and African Day follows that. The violet and jasmine in the middle notes give it a softly feminine turn without ever going sweet, so it reads much the same whoever is wearing it, and it sits comfortably on most skin types.

Choose our Inspiration

Byredo is a Swedish perfume house based in Stockholm, founded in 2006 and known for building a fragrance around a memory or a place rather than a marketing brief. Bal d'Afrique arrived in 2009, inspired by Paris in the late 1920s and that decade's fascination with African art, music and dance.

The house sits at the luxury end of the market, closer to niche perfumes than to the big designer labels, and Bal d'Afrique is one of the perfumes it is still best known for. It is also one of those luxury scents that reads as unisex rather than masculine, which is part of why it has kept its audience for so long.

Why choose us?

African Day is our alternative to Byredo Bal d'Afrique. It is our own blend, made with French fragrance oils and filled by hand in small batches rather than run off an industrial line, and the aim is for it to smell like the same fragrance from the first spray.

We only make it as an eau de parfum, since that is the concentration the original fragrance uses and the one where this citrus-violet accord holds together longest. It is bottled at 50 ml like the rest of our perfumes. If it does not smell similar to what you remember, you have 15 days to send it back and exchange it.
