Mancera sells Roses Vanille as an eau de parfum, so 50 Shades of Vanilla matches that concentration rather than a lighter eau de toilette. That is part of why the rose and vanilla come through as strongly as they do.

Longevity is 5 to 10 hours. Handmade in small batches with the same French fragrance oils that go into the rest of our perfumes and fragrances, and vegan throughout. Fifteen days to swap 50 Shades of Vanilla for one of our other dupes if it does not suit you.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

50 Shades of Vanilla is our perfume dupe of Roses Vanille by Mancera, made for anyone drawn to that creamy rose and vanilla combination. It opens on lemon, moves into rose, and settles on vanilla, white musk and cedar.

The rose is the part people notice first. It is not a soapy, old-fashioned rose, it reads jammy and a little sweet, closer to a rose dessert than a rose garden. Give it ten minutes and the lemon fades, leaving the rose to sit on a soft vanilla base with just enough white musk and cedar underneath to stop it turning sugary. Projection is generous for the first hour, then it settles close to the skin and stays warm rather than loud.

This is a fragrance dupe of Roses Vanille rather than a mass factory clone, and it smells like the original from the first spray. The rose and vanilla accord does most of the work: the middle notes are where that rose lives, right before the vanilla base takes hold. EDT, EDP or EXDP - what you are actually buying

The difference between these labels is not quality but how much perfume oil sits in the bottle. That decides how long the scent stays on your skin and how far it travels.

EDT Eau de Toilette 5 to 15% perfume oil

The lightest of the three. It opens fresh and fast, but fades after three to five hours. Pleasant in heat and at the office, as long as you top it up during the day.

Our choiceEDP Eau de Parfum ~20% perfume oil

The middle ground that became the standard. It lasts six to eight hours, one spray in the morning is enough, and the scent stays recognisable into the evening without filling the room.

EXDP Extrait de Parfum 20 to 40% perfume oil

The densest form, worn in drops, and it can last over ten hours. In return it loses that easy opening, and the price per bottle climbs the most.

Why we chose EDP

Every Chez Pierre perfume is made in Eau de Parfum concentration, with 20% perfume oil. That is not by accident.

An eau de toilette would mean carrying the bottle with you and refreshing the scent after lunch. An extrait would push the price up, and only someone counting hours would notice the gain. EDP sits exactly in between: one spray in the morning carries the whole working day, and the scent opens and develops instead of settling on the skin at once.

So we don't make lighter and pricier versions of the same scent. We make one, in the concentration where that scent works best.

Three things describe every perfume, whatever the price or the name on the bottle. Once you separate them, it is easier to say what you actually want from a scent.

Longevity

How many hours the scent stays on skin

Measured from the moment you spray to the moment you can no longer smell it up close. It depends on the concentration, but also on your skin: on dry skin every perfume lasts less, so a dab of unscented cream before spraying helps.

Projection

How far it travels around you

Strongest in the first hour, it tells you how much space the scent takes up. Big projection is great for evenings and colder days, while at the office or in a meeting it usually gets in the way more than it helps.

Sillage

The trail you leave behind

Pronounced „see-yazh“, it means the trail a scent leaves behind you. It is the reason someone turns around as you pass. A perfume can last a long time and still leave a small trail, and the other way round.

Strong is not the same as good. A perfume with huge projection quickly tires both you and the people around you, while one without any trail stays your own private thing.

50 Shades of Vanilla works best from autumn through winter, when a warm vanilla base has something to hold onto, but the lemon up top keeps it from feeling heavy in warmer weather too. One spray on the wrist in the morning tends to be enough.

It sits on the feminine side of the shelf rather than the masculine one, and that is how most people wear it, though the rose and vanilla combination is gourmand enough to suit anyone with a sweet tooth. It is not a unisex scent in the strict sense, but that is a description and not a rule: pick it for her, for yourself, or for him if this is the direction he likes. Easy at a desk in summer, easy under a coat in winter, and at home on an evening out.

Mancera is a French perfume house, and the nose behind Roses Vanille is Pierre Montale, who put the fragrance together for a 2011 launch. It has stayed one of the house's most talked about scents ever since, sitting alongside their wider oud and amber collection.

It occupies that space between designer and niche that a lot of independent perfume houses hold, sold through select stores rather than every mall counter. People who know it tend to describe it as a rose garden crossed with a dessert, which is close to the truth.
