You get Modern Love as an eau de parfum, 50 ml, at about 20% fragrance oil. It costs €25, the same as every fragrance we make, whatever the original scent behind it. Free shipping on orders from €49 and delivery in 2 to 5 working days, tracked from the moment it leaves us.

Love Don't Be Shy is sold as an eau de parfum, and Modern Love matches that concentration rather than a lighter eau de toilette. Longevity runs 6 to 8 hours, with soft sillage that stays close rather than filling a room.

French fragrance oils, handmade in small batches, vegan and never tested on animals. If Modern Love is not what you expected, you have 15 days to exchange it.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Modern Love is our perfume dupe of Love Don't Be Shy by Kilian, built to smell like the original from the first spray. It opens on neroli, bergamot, pink pepper and coriander, moves into a honeyed heart of orange blossom, honeysuckle, jasmine, iris and rose, then settles into marshmallow, vanilla and caramel with a trace of musk and civet underneath.

The fruity, sweet floral wrapped in a candy-like base is the part everyone remembers from the original. Early on it reads bright and a touch spicy from the coriander and neroli, then the flowers take over for an hour or two before the marshmallow and vanilla base pulls it all into something soft and sweet that sits close to the skin.

The orange blossom and the sugar-sweet base are what people bring up whenever this fragrance comes up, and a review of the original almost always names both notes. Our version leans on the same orange blossom and sugar pairing, carrying it through the middle notes without losing the candy-like base underneath.

EDT, EDP or EXDP - what you are actually buying

The difference between these labels is not quality but how much perfume oil sits in the bottle. That decides how long the scent stays on your skin and how far it travels.

EDT Eau de Toilette 5 to 15% perfume oil

The lightest of the three. It opens fresh and fast, but fades after three to five hours. Pleasant in heat and at the office, as long as you top it up during the day.

Our choiceEDP Eau de Parfum ~20% perfume oil

The middle ground that became the standard. It lasts six to eight hours, one spray in the morning is enough, and the scent stays recognisable into the evening without filling the room.

EXDP Extrait de Parfum 20 to 40% perfume oil

The densest form, worn in drops, and it can last over ten hours. In return it loses that easy opening, and the price per bottle climbs the most.

Why we chose EDP

Every Chez Pierre perfume is made in Eau de Parfum concentration, with 20% perfume oil. That is not by accident.

An eau de toilette would mean carrying the bottle with you and refreshing the scent after lunch. An extrait would push the price up, and only someone counting hours would notice the gain. EDP sits exactly in between: one spray in the morning carries the whole working day, and the scent opens and develops instead of settling on the skin at once.

So we don't make lighter and pricier versions of the same scent. We make one, in the concentration where that scent works best.

Three things describe every perfume, whatever the price or the name on the bottle. Once you separate them, it is easier to say what you actually want from a scent.

Longevity

How many hours the scent stays on skin

Measured from the moment you spray to the moment you can no longer smell it up close. It depends on the concentration, but also on your skin: on dry skin every perfume lasts less, so a dab of unscented cream before spraying helps.

Projection

How far it travels around you

Strongest in the first hour, it tells you how much space the scent takes up. Big projection is great for evenings and colder days, while at the office or in a meeting it usually gets in the way more than it helps.

Sillage

The trail you leave behind

Pronounced „see-yazh“, it means the trail a scent leaves behind you. It is the reason someone turns around as you pass. A perfume can last a long time and still leave a small trail, and the other way round.

Strong is not the same as good. A perfume with huge projection quickly tires both you and the people around you, while one without any trail stays your own private thing.

That is why every one of our perfume descriptions says how it wears, not only how it smells.

Modern Love comes into its own once the weather turns, through autumn and winter evenings when a warm, sweet fragrance actually earns its place. It is a touch heavy for summer heat.

It is built as a unisex scent that reads more like a personality than a gendered category, a little more masculine on some skin and more feminine on others. Save it for evening wear rather than the office, since the marshmallow base is rich enough that a light touch goes a long way. One or two sprays before a date or a night out is usually plenty.

Modern Love sits alongside our other sweet, gourmand fragrances, and it is one of the scents people reach for when they want something closer to dessert than to the usual perfumes on a department store shelf.

Choose our Inspiration

By Kilian is the house Kilian Hennessy built after leaving his family's cognac business to focus entirely on niche perfumery, and Love Don't Be Shy has been one of its defining fragrances since 2007. It sits closer to niche than mainstream designer perfumery, priced like a luxury purchase and sold mostly through select boutiques rather than every department store counter.

Most people just call it Love Don't Be Shy, sometimes shortened further, and it is the original that a long list of perfume dupes are still chasing, ours included. Read a review of it and that same orange blossom sweetness comes up every time. Getting this fragrance right as a dupe took several tries before it smelled close enough to sell.
