Dior sells Fahrenheit as an eau de parfum, so Sharp Sword matches that concentration rather than a lighter eau de toilette. That is part of why the base holds up as well as it does.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Sharp Sword is our perfume dupe of Fahrenheit by Dior, made for men who want that unmistakable violet and leather contrast in a bottle they can wear every week. It opens on citrus and lavender over a spicy nutmeg flower, moves into a violet leaf and honeysuckle heart, and settles on leather, vetiver and tonka bean.

That pairing of florals against leather is the part everyone recognises, an odd, almost metallic contrast that has kept Fahrenheit divisive since the 1980s. The citrus opening fades within the first half hour, then the floral heart takes over before the dry, woody base sets in for the long haul. Projection is strong for the first few hours, then it settles close to the skin, though the trail stays noticeable for the rest of the day.

Fahrenheit is a difficult fragrance to match, which is why there are fewer good perfume dupes of it than of most designer classics. That leather-violet accord shows up as soon as the middle notes take over, well before the patchouli and amber base settles in, and it is rare enough that few other fragrances even attempt it.

The difference between these labels is not quality but how much perfume oil sits in the bottle. That decides how long the scent stays on your skin and how far it travels.

EDT Eau de Toilette 5 to 15% perfume oil

The lightest of the three. It opens fresh and fast, but fades after three to five hours. Pleasant in heat and at the office, as long as you top it up during the day.

Our choiceEDP Eau de Parfum ~20% perfume oil

The middle ground that became the standard. It lasts six to eight hours, one spray in the morning is enough, and the scent stays recognisable into the evening without filling the room.

EXDP Extrait de Parfum 20 to 40% perfume oil

The densest form, worn in drops, and it can last over ten hours. In return it loses that easy opening, and the price per bottle climbs the most.

Why we chose EDP

Every Chez Pierre perfume is made in Eau de Parfum concentration, with 20% perfume oil. That is not by accident.

An eau de toilette would mean carrying the bottle with you and refreshing the scent after lunch. An extrait would push the price up, and only someone counting hours would notice the gain. EDP sits exactly in between: one spray in the morning carries the whole working day, and the scent opens and develops instead of settling on the skin at once.

So we don't make lighter and pricier versions of the same scent. We make one, in the concentration where that scent works best.

Three things describe every perfume, whatever the price or the name on the bottle. Once you separate them, it is easier to say what you actually want from a scent.

Longevity

How many hours the scent stays on skin

Measured from the moment you spray to the moment you can no longer smell it up close. It depends on the concentration, but also on your skin: on dry skin every perfume lasts less, so a dab of unscented cream before spraying helps.

Projection

How far it travels around you

Strongest in the first hour, it tells you how much space the scent takes up. Big projection is great for evenings and colder days, while at the office or in a meeting it usually gets in the way more than it helps.

Sillage

The trail you leave behind

Pronounced „see-yazh“, it means the trail a scent leaves behind you. It is the reason someone turns around as you pass. A perfume can last a long time and still leave a small trail, and the other way round.

Strong is not the same as good. A perfume with huge projection quickly tires both you and the people around you, while one without any trail stays your own private thing.

Sharp Sword belongs to autumn and winter, when the dense, woody base has cold air to push against, though the citrus top keeps it wearable in summer too. One spray in the morning tends to be enough.

Dior built and marketed Fahrenheit as a masculine fragrance, and Sharp Sword keeps that character, bold rather than soft. It works for the office in small doses, but it comes into its own in the evening. Buy it for him and you are on safe ground; buy it for her and it still works, since plenty of women wear leather and violet without wanting anything feminine about it. Close to unisex, in other words.

Dior is a French fashion and perfume house, and Fahrenheit launched in 1988 as one of the first men's fragrances to pair citrus freshness with a heavy, dark base. It remains one of the house's most talked about releases, mentioned in the same breath as its more recent designer and niche competitors.

It sits firmly in designer territory, sold through most major fragrance retailers rather than small independent counters. People who know it say it smells like petrol and flowers over warm wood, which is closer to the truth than it sounds. Fahrenheit still gets plenty of attention on perfume forums, and read any online review of it and the violet-leather pairing is the reason it stands out among luxury perfumes of that era.
