“Perfume is the invisible, unforgettable, fashionable accessory that announces your arrival and prolongs your departure”. - Coco Chanel

To get the most out of it, it is important to know how to apply cologne properly, regarding your individual preferences and your environment.

By selecting a scent that resonates with your soul, you can ensure that you have a pleasant scent that reflects your inner self, and stay remembered wherever you go.

Fragrances are deeply connected to your memories. Scents may evoke different emotions, so it is important to choose a scent that reflects your feelings. Applying cologne is an art that can make you feel confident and beautiful.

A twisted citrus perfume can restore a sense of energy and optimism, while floral notes may inspire emotions of romance and joy.

Additionally, a woody scent may evoke feelings of strength and courage, while an oriental scent may evoke feelings of mystery and intrigue. The connection between the mind and perfume is a powerful one.

2. Choose the Right Time

Morning is the best time to apply perfume because the body’s natural temperature is higher, and you can ensure that you have a pleasant scent that lasts.

Start after you’ve showered while your skin is still warm and your pores are open. You should wear cologne on clear skin best as the natural oils of the skin will not interfere with the scent.

3. Choose the Right Place

It is of huge importance to know where to apply cologne. The best places to spray cologne are on pulse points, areas where you produce the most heat, such as your wrists, neck, and behind the ears, or lower stomach, and feel how body chemistry is doing the magic!

4. Apply Cologne in the Right Amount

Studies have shown that the perfect amount of cologne to stay all day is 2 to 4 sprays. This amount of cologne will provide a pleasant scent without being overpowering. You should begin with a trifle of the fragrance and if you need more increase usage.

5. Layer the Scent

To make the scent last longer, you can layer it with a matching body spray or lotion. As a lighter scent body spray can be used on the whole body to help refresh throughout the day.

It does not have the same lasting power as Eau de Toilette or higher concentrations that are more intensive and have stronger perfume oil concentrations such as Eau de Parfum and Extract de Parfum.

Note that body spray is not meant to replace traditional colognes, but rather to supplement them.

The Role of Perfume Concentration in Application and Longevity

Perfumes are a blend of water, alcohol, and essential oils. While the strengths and concentrations can vary from one product to another.

Those oils can be anything from natural botanicals to entirely artificial chemical ingredients. Your perfume should be more intense if the amount of perfume oil is higher.

Here are the most common Types of Perfumes:

  • Eau de Cologne (EDC) 3% - 10% oils
  • Eau de Toilette (EDT) 5% - 15% oils
  • Eau de Parfum (EDP) 15% - 20% oils
  • Parfum / Extrait 20% - 35% oils

Factors That May Affect How to Wear Cologne Appropriately

  • Skin types: Perfume reacts differently to other skin types. People with dry skin tend to have a shorter-lasting scent, while those with oily skin should have a longer-lasting scent.
  • Weather conditions: Fragrance may also have a special reflection in various weather conditions. Using cologne that smells strong and sweet in the summer may become more subtle in the winter. Experiment with many fragrances to find what works best for you.
  • Temperature: The best temperature to keep cologne is between 15-20°C (59-68°F). It will ensure that the fragrance is not exposed to extreme temperatures and humidity can destroy the molecular integrity of the fragrance. Keep your colognes in a cool and dark place.
  • Fabrics and Materials: Depending on the fabric, a scent may linger longer or shorter. If you apply cologne on sweaters and coats they will trap in the scent, making it last days. Note that fabrics like satin or silk will not hold the scent that long.

This is because, in the winter months, the air is cooler and drier, which can prevent cologne from lingering. However, in the summer, the air is warmer and more humid, which can cause the scent to last longer.

Discover a fragrance that complements your identity and fits with climate conditions as well. Your fragrance should be an individual expression of your image!

6 Frequent Mistakes When Applying Cologne

  1. Do not shake the perfumes! It may be the reason for the chemical structure to become unstable. This way you have more oxygen molecules inside the cologne which leads to decreased longevity.
  2. Applying too much cologne. Prevent overdoing it on a daily basis. Depending on the intensity of the scent, find the golden ratio that suits both you and your environment.
  3. Rubbing the cologne on the skin. When you rub the cologne into your skin, the scent fades faster because it breaks the molecular bonds in the scent.
  4. Spraying cologne directly on your clothes prevents mixing with your natural oils, but that is something that provides unique quality. Spraying a fragrance directly on clothing may destroy some fabrics.
  5. Spraying a mist cloud of cologne and then walking through it is an example of how most of it ends up on the floor. The main part of the fragrance should be placed directly on your skin.
  6. Non-spray nozzle cologne is an easy way to over-apply cologne. You should put one finger on the top of the opened bottle, tip it upside down, and gently dub it to your skin.

How to Find the Best Cologne For Me?

"Your fragrance should be something that is unique to your personality; it should be something that speaks to your own individual style." -Domenico Dolce, D&G

Testing the cologne is very important to find out how it will react to your skin chemistry. Please note that you won’t be able to test multiple different scents at the same time.

Here are a few steps to make sure you’ve tried a variety of scents and picked the one that is right for you.

Use the Colored Scent Wheel

Is a helpful tool that represents a large spectrum of fragrance accords, familiar to the scent family. You should add any previous knowledge of scents you might have, and think about which scents might be appealing to you.

Do online research for the fragrances that include these scents so that you have a starting point once you reach the store.

Test the Fragrance on Your Skin

Spray one cologne type on each wrist to see how they react to your body chemistry. If you want to test multiple frags you may use inner elbows also.

Do not test more than four at a time or this could confuse your sense of smell. One of the best solutions is to test the cologne with our small samples box (10x5ml) which will allow you to experience the cologne at its finest in different conditions, before larger purchases.

Give the Scent Time to Develop

Each fragrance has its own lifecycle and needs time to pass for the perfume to reflect on the skin. When you’re wearing cologne it goes through 3 stages of evaporation:

  1. Top notes evaporate first. The scent is perceived immediately upon application of a perfume and usually lasts 5 minutes.
  2. Then the medium notes will appear for the next 30 minutes as the bridge creating a seamless transition that helps to round out the olfactory experience.
  3. Base notes will show up after and they are supposed to last between 6-8 hours for a regular Eau de Parfum. (depends on your skin type, previously explained).

Notice how each smell has developed once it’s had a chance to work with your body chemistry. This will give you a true idea of what each cologne will smell like on you.

While testing the scent in between each inhale, it can be helpful to smell something different to cleanse the nostrils (coffee works well for this).

Usually, 15 minutes will be enough for cologne to develop, and mix with the natural oils on your skin in order to get a total reflection on the particular scent symphony.

If you still love it, buy it! If there are one or more fragrances you really enjoy after the development period, there’s a good chance you’ll enjoy owning that scent.

By following these simple steps of how to wear cologne that fits you, considering your research, different weather conditions, fabrics and materials, different ratios of cologne, and skin type, you will have a pleasant scent that lasts, providing a stronger appearance.
